Sunday, Sunday, Sunday
Feb. 4th, 2007 10:33 pmHappy Imbolc/Candlemas/Groundhogs Day. Spring is offically here in California. Our lemon tree is rather heavy with fruit. It was about 70 today. I'll understand if that comes as small comfort to those of you in the ice-covered regions.
jlfranklin just "popped in" to the Bay area for the weekend. I'm sure he planned the trip in advance, but we did not know about it until he was here. We met up with him and
cblack (who we meant to catch up with when we moved out here) and Rob (whose LJ username I do not know, if it even exists). Crystal gave us the Tour of San Francisco. We got a lot of good pictures, which will be posted eventually. Franklin got more pictures. On order thousands. He's got a fancy-schmancy camera with rapid-fire photography and a 4GB card. He's got a LOT of pictures. We went to the Cliff House for lunch, and Pinnochio's in North Beach for dinner. Both excellent places, and we had some excellent wines.
My effort to document the seasons here photographically has fizzled. I never got anything around Yule. It was awfully busy around here then, and we were out of town for a while after that. In some ways though, it doesn't matter. We don't seem to actually HAVE seasons here. In the summer it's foggy in the mornings. That's about the only difference.
I gave the IGPP (Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics) seminizar at UCSC on Friday, on my work on the Martian crustal dichotomy. I was less than satisfied with my performance. People told me it was good and it didn't seem like they were just being polite, but to me it seemed that my delivery lacked . . . something. I made no actualy mistakes, but I wasn't as fluid as I would have liked. I also ran a bit short on time, but that was largely due to interjection by an audience member who wanted to dispute the concept of True Polar Wander in general. He was not commenting on my work specifically, but an established geophysical phenomenon. I answered as best I could, but I was not prepared to stop my talk in order to explain the concept of the inertia tensor from first principles to one person.
The LPSC (Lunar and Planetary Science Conference) schedule is out. For once the dichotomy has its own oral session . . . now that I'm no longer working on that problem. I did, however, get a talk in the Enceladus session.
We did not watch the Superbowl, since we have no interest in that. We did cook nachos and chili, however, and have three quarts leftover. Kate played Kingdom Hearts II and I played Twilight Princess.
I'm sure there are things I am forgetting, but that will have to wait.
