Went in to UC Santa Cruz today to fill out the paperwork and such. I won't actually be starting work until next week, but this gets this out of the way.

The campus is frelling spectacular. So much nicer-looking than the other campuses I've been on. It's up in a forest on top of a hill. From the edge you can look out over the city and Monteray Bay. From within, you can't tell you're on a college campus. The structure I parked in is perhaps 60 yards from the next building over, but you can't see it. It's all trees. I'm now wishing I'd held out for family housing.

Speaking of parking, that's going to suck. It looks like I'll have to shell out $474 for a year's parking pass. I'd have to take three different buses to get from my house to campus without driving. I'm looking into possibly driving to a park and ride and then taking the bus. That would be cheaper, but there's the danger that the park and ride may be full. There are vanpools available, but I'd have to leave work at 4 in order to use that. Why do they think nobody works past 4? I registered with a carpool-matching service, but I don't expect that to pan out. The other oddity is that once I decide on a method of transportation, I'm stuck with it. I can get EITHER a free bus pass OR buy a parking permit. If I want both I have to pay full price for the bus pass. Also from what I understand, the commute is going to suck. It's only about 20 miles, and there really aren't that many people, but the highways in Santa Cruz are very badly designed. Everyone's merging everywhere.

National Van Lines finally got back to us and said that the truck is running late. It was supposed to be here by the 5th at the latest, and now it's the 9th at the latest. I find this odd, given that they originally wanted to deliver it before the 1st. At least we get $50 for each day they're late. I'm wearing the last of my clean clothes. Fortunately our washer and dryer are arriving tomorrow morning. And our water heater will be replaced this evening so I can take a real shower again. Last night we heated water in the electric kettle for sponge baths. That was a lot less fun than it sounds, especially when followed by the cold rinse in the shower.
