Just heard a competitor has submitted a paper on the project I've been working on. Not surprised by the news, but disappointed by it.
And if I hadn't been such a lazy bastard, I probably could have done it first. Ever since the "upgrade" to our computing cluster, my convection code hasn't worked properly. But if I'd just moved a bit faster last fall I could have had all the calculations done, and we could have written the paper by now. It looks like I lose. Oh well, I'm sure this isn't the last time I'll get scooped. I think it comes with the career.
Between this and the car, 2008 is not starting out very well for me. Well, time for booze!
In other news, I'm teaching the Planetary Science class at UC Santa Cruz right now. It's supposed to be a 37.5% position. That translates to 15 hours a week, but I've been spending at least twice that on it. Hence I've not been very talkative lately, and I've not been spending enough time on research. The class is going ok, though. It's nice to teach an upper-division class for a change. The students are interested in the subject, willing to ask me questions, and they can actually do math! But because I've never taught this class before, the preparation required is enormous.
kathleenroberts is doing fine as well. (Just doesn't post much.) Not feeling sick at all, and the pregnancy is going well. She's being run ragged at work because the North Bay and East Bay reps both quit last year and no suitable replacements have been found. So she's having to cover the most critical portions of those areas in addition to hers. Nintendo's going to be scrambling when she goes on maternity leave.
