We now have a Wii at our house. Actually, we've had the Wii since last Friday, but I didn't want to say anything before the launch. Kate's job means we get sent a bunch of Nintendo products. They technically still belong to Nintendo, but we get to use them while she's working for them.
We have Wii Sports and Excite Truck. Wii Sports is an excellent demonstration of the new controller. The Wii-remote is a LOT easier to use than I feared it would be. You can hold it like a tennis racket, golf club or whatever and swing it like you're swinging the actual sporting implement, but you don't have to go to that much effort. The motion-sensing is based on acceleration, not total movement, so a quick flick of the wrist will accomplish the same thing as a swing of the arm. I find the larger movements easier to control, however. Wii Sports contains five different games: tennis, baseball, bowling, boxing, and golf. None of them are terribly sophisticated in terms of graphics, or details, but then they don't need to be. It's all about the gameplay. This is not the kind of game that's going to enthrall me for hours, working on strategy and improving my teams, but this is the first sports game I ever had any desire to play. The boxing module uses the nunchuck attatchment, such that you're holding one piece in each hand, so the game can sense you boxing two-handed. All the others only require the Wii-remote. This is supposed to be secured with a wrist-strap in case you get carried away and try to fling it across the room.
I don't know how much I'll be playing the Wii right away. The only launch title I'm really excited about is Zelda, and we'll probably get sent that before too long. Kate's out shopping and may be acquiring Red Steel. We'll see. I'm also interested in the NES/SNES classic games available for download. In the meantime, I've got plenty for the DS to keep me busy. Also, I'll need to be doing things like going to work, washing, cooking, etc.
When Final Fantasy moved to the Playstation ten years ago, I switched systems with it. I've got no real desire for a PS3, though. Maybe when FF XIII comes out, I'd consider it, if the price drops.
